We travel a lot and especially have the opportunity to travel to different areas with our non-profit organization. So, this year I decided to incorporate more about geography and maps into our homeschool learning. My daughter is in first grade and I know that the concept of the world and where we live in it is a big concept. (Heck, it’s a big concept even for me!) So, we’ve been trying to find an easy way to illustrate the concept. I recently saw someone talking about this craft online, so we decided to give it a try! (It would also be a great earth day craft activity.)
What is Geography?
The first thing I did was talk to my daughter about geography. Simply put, geography is the study of the earth. Within our studies, we’ll be covering continents, countries, states and cities. As you can imagine, it’s easy to get each of these confused, especially if you’re a kid.
We then read the book Me on the Map, where a little girl goes through each layer of geography. The country, city, state and street address where she lives.
TIP: If you’re studying somewhere you haven’t been, be sure to use Google maps to look up the information and even the street view of the place!

5 Different Colors of Paper
1. Print the geography template, each one on a different page color. (For example, street address on one color, city on another color, state on a third color, etc.)
2. Have the child cut out each circle on the templates.
3. Have the child complete each geography circle.
4. Hole punch the circles and put them on a binder ring.
We actually put a stick-on hook in our learning corner near the maps in our homeschool classroom and hung our geography flip book from it. We’ll make a new “book” for each area and location that we study during the year. At the end of the school year, we will have a collection of “cheat sheet” books that illustrate areas from continent all the way down to street address.

OK, I just have to tell you about my new favorite set of books. Before we started studying geography, I didn’t know about this author and I’m so glad I stumbled across this set! We’ve already ordered a couple and plan to order the rest soon. Check them out!
