Equipment
1 Crockpot (6 quarts or more)
Ingredients
6cupswhole milk
2 12-ounce cansevaporate milk*
2 cupsheavy cream
3cupschocolate chips(I use 2 cups milk chocolate and 1 cup dark chocolate)
Hot cocoa toppings like marshmallows, chocolate shavings, sprinkles, whipped cream, etc.- optional
Instructions
Add all ingredients to a crockpot and stir.
Place lid on crockpot and set to low. Cook for at least 3 hours, or until heated through.
Serve with marshmallows, whipped cream, and fun hot chocolate toppings.
IMPORTANT COOKING TIP
Stir the hot cocoa frequently during the first hour all the way to the bottom to make sure the chocolate isn't sticking to the bottom and burning. After that, replace the lid and stir occasionally until heated through.**
Notes
*Some people make this with 2 cans of sweetened condensed milk (instead of evaporated milk), but I found that to be too sweet for our liking. If you like extra sweet hot chocolate switch out the evaporated milk for small sweetened milk. You can also add 2 teaspoons of vanilla for a richer flavor, but I think it's fine without it.ABOUT COOKING TIME**Crockpots heat very differently. I've made this in one crockpot that heated on low around 3 hours. I made it in another one of my crockpots and it took almost 4 hours on low. If you're making this for a party or special occasion, you may want to start early so that it gets heated through completely. If you want a melted marshmallow topping, add large marshmallows the last 30 minutes of warming. Place lid on and you'll have melted marshmallows by the time you serve.
