The Halloween Hopscotch Game
We made Halloween Hopscotch for a fun trick or treat trail in our driveway one year and it was a huge hit. I think families had more fun with this Halloween activity than the candy we handed out. It’s great for interactive Halloween themed activities!
What is Halloween hopscotch?
Halloween hopscotch is a regular chalk hopscotch game with a Halloween game twist. You make a Halloween hop scotch game, but replace the directions with fun Halloween themed prompts. It’s sometimes called Halloween footprint hopscotch because people make it with Halloween monster feet cutout for Halloween hop games.

What Do You Put On Halloween Hopscotch?
Here are some fun and spooky ideas to include in the hopscotch game:
- Howl like a Werewolf: Kids can stand on this square and let out their best werewolf howl before hopping to the next one.
- Fly like a Ghost: This square can be designated as the “floating” square. Kids can pretend to float like ghosts as they jump to the next spot.
- Ride the Witch’s Broom: Draw a broomstick on the ground, and kids can hop along it as if they are flying on a witch’s broomstick.
- Zombie Stomp: On this square, kids can do their best zombie walk or stomp before moving on.
- Spider Crawl: Draw a spiderweb on the ground and have the kids crawl along the lines as they move through this square.
- Mummy Shuffle: Kids can pretend to be mummies, wrapping themselves up with imaginary bandages as they hop along.
- Jack-O’-Lantern Jump: Draw a jack-o’-lantern face on the ground, and kids can jump from one eye to the next.
- Frankenstein’s Stomp: Kids can stomp their feet like Frankenstein as they pass through this square.
- Witch’s Brew Jump: Pretend the squares are bubbling cauldrons, and kids can hop over them to avoid getting caught in the “witch’s brew.”
- Skeleton Dance: Kids can do their best skeleton dance moves as they hop from one square to another.
- Black Cat Leap: Kids can pretend to leap over a black cat (imaginary) on this square for good luck!
- Bat Flight: Draw bats on the ground and have kids “fly” from one bat to another.
- Haunted House Hop: This square can be a challenge where kids have to hop through a zig-zag path like they’re maneuvering through a haunted house.
- Candy Collect: A special square where kids can collect imaginary candies or real candy by hopping on one foot.
- Monster Mash: In this square, kids can do a funny dance or imitate their favorite Halloween monster before moving on.
- Witch’s Hat Balance: Draw a witch’s hat on the ground and have the kids stand on one foot while balancing on the hat before hopping to the next square. Or, you can have a real witch hat like this for kids to try on and keep!
- Ghost Boo-Boo Jump: Kids can pretend to jump over little ghosts (imaginary) that pop up in this square and say “Boo!” as they do.
- Monster Freeze: Designate one square as the “Monster Freeze” square. When kids land on this square, they must freeze in a monster pose until it’s their turn again.
- Skeleton Limbo: Draw a skeleton’s ribcage on the ground and have kids limbo as they pass through this square.
- Scarecrow Spin: Kids can spin around like scarecrows on this square before hopping ahead.
- Batty Balance: Draw bats on the ground, and kids must balance one foot on each bat as they hop through this square.
- Candy Corn Hop: Kids can hop along in a triangle pattern, mimicking the shape of candy corn as they move.
- Ghostly Whispers: Kids must tiptoe quietly through this square as if they are trying not to wake any resting ghosts.
- Monster Jump: Kids can do their best big jumps from one square to another, pretending to be fierce Halloween monsters with their best monster growl.
- Pumpkin Patch: Draw pumpkins on the ground, and kids must hop from one pumpkin to the next as if they’re picking them from a patch.
- Snake Shake: On this square, kids can follow a wiggly snack pattern to get to the next squares.
- Witches’ Cauldron: Draw a large circle on the ground as a cauldron, and kids can jump inside it, pretending to stir a magical potion while they’re there.
- Ghostly Hop: Kids must hop through this square while making ghost sounds.
- Spider Jump: Draw a spider’s web on the ground, and kids must jump from one corner of the web to another.
- Halloween Victory Pose: The last square can be a special one where kids strike a Halloween victory pose before completing the hopscotch.

How To Make Halloween Hopscotch
We chalked our Halloween board squares because we drew our Halloween trail on our driveway as a trick-or-treat trail that kids could do after getting candy from us.
This was one of the best Halloween ideas ever!
We left this Halloween trail up for a week and we had kids come back and do fun hopscotch before school all week!
(We had one little boy with his dad ride up every evening and ride the trail on his bike the entire week after Halloween until the rain washed the chalk trail away. It was so cute!)
Making Hopscotch On Halloween
Here’s how to make a hopscotch for Halloween…
1. Plan your Halloween hopscotch.
- Will it be outside as a chalk trail?
- Are you using pieces of paper taped to the floor for hopscotch?
- Are you making monster feet hopscotch? (These decals are fun, too!)
- Will it be a traditional hopscotch grid or more of board spaces (like a trail)?
HALLOWEEN ACTIVITY TIP: If you’re using paper, be sure to tape it on all sides or the paper hopscotch squares will rip easily. (Use painters’ tape so that it comes off the floor easily.)
2. Create your Halloween hopscotch game squares.
It’s better if you plan out your hopscotch directions / hopscotch activities ahead of time because you can make it flow better.
We didn’t plan ahead, but we definitely will when we make this DIY Halloween hopscotch game again.
Also, we didn’t make ours into the traditional 1-2-1 hopscotch board. We made ours more of a trail (a chalk walk) because we wanted big spaces for kids to do activities.
If you make a big hopscotch board, make sure that kids easily know what to do next. Put lots of big arrows and prompts to keep them moving in the right direction.
HALLOWEEN GAME TIP: Add music to your Halloween hopscotch area for more fun!
Here are some Halloween hopscotch directions that we used:
- Howl like a werewolf
- Ride your witches broom (and then we made a squiggly line that came off the trail space and around and then back onto the game trail)
- Do a ghost boo
- Go Get Your Candy! (We put this on the offshoot sidewalk that went to our door.)
- Do the monster mash
- Play the time warp
Those are just some Halloween hopscotch ideas, but you can do anything you want! You can also do one specific theme like a pumpkin-themed hopscotch board, zombie run, cool math hop game, or even more of an obstacle course.
3. Play the hopscotch game!
Play the game yourself before the Halloween party or trick or treating to make sure it makes sense and flows well. That way you can make any changes or adjustments before your Halloween event!
We didn’t use a rock (like in the classic hopscotch game) or a dice or anything. We just let the directions naturally move the kids through the hop scotch board game.
When we make it again, we may also add candy tables or hand out candy at different board spaces after they perform the activity (just to add some more Halloween fun). We may also add some fun accessories (witch hats, Halloween party favors, ring spiders for Halloween hopscotch handouts, etc.).
