Green Bean Casserole Recipe Tips
Is green bean casserole better with canned or fresh green beans?
You can make green bean casserole with fresh green beans, frozen green beans, or canned green beans (which is what I use).
If you use fresh green beans, you need to blanch them before following the rest of the recipe (below).
What kind of green beans do you use for green bean casserole?
I’ve used regular cut canned green beans and also French canned green beans and they both work well.
You can also use trimmed and cut fresh green beans. Blanch them first for 3-5 minutes before adding them to the casserole.

Do you drain green beans for green bean casserole?
Yes, drain your canned green beans before adding them to your green bean casserole ingredients.
If you don’t drain the beans, your green bean casserole will be watery or soupy.
Can you make green bean casserole ahead of time?
Yes! You can make green bean casserole the day before.
Just be sure to cook it without the fried onions toppings. (If you cook it with the French fried onions on top ahead of time they will get soggy in the refrigerator.)
The day you need the casserole, add the French fried onions toppings and bake until warmed through, bubbly, taking care that the onions are crispy, but not burned.
RECIPE TIP: This is also a great leftovers recipe if you have leftover green beans from Thanksgiving dinner! Repurpose them into a casserole dish the next day!
