The smelly egg Easter game is a fun game we made up to use leftover Easter eggs we had leftover from our Easter party.
It’s a funny game for kids that really got everyone laughing, but it’s just as fun for adults to play as a family activity and even a teen game that teenagers will love!
About The Smelly Egg Easter Game
What is the smelly egg game?
The smelly egg game is a guessing game where players smell plastic eggs filled with different “smelly” items and try to guess what the items are inside (or what scent it is).
Setting Up The Smelly Easter Egg Game
Supplies for the Easter Egg Game
For the smelly egg game, you’ll need:
- Plastic Easter eggs that open and have the holes in the bottom for people to smell (it’s important that you get the eggs with the holes in the bottom, which are usually the cheaper ones)
- Fragrant items to put in the eggs (see my list of recommendations below)
- Clear tape
- Black marker
- Paper (enough for each player)
- Clipboards (optional)*
- Pens/pencils (enough for each player)
- Basket, egg cartons, or container for the eggs
- Prize(s) for winner(s)
*THINK ABOUT HOW YOUR PLAYERS ARE GOING TO WRITE! If you have a large group of players that won’t fit around a table like we did, we grabbed some clipboards like this (and we use them regularly during games now, too!).
⭐️PARTY TIP: Do not use anything liquid or small (like ground spices) or they will leak/fall through the hole.
Ideas for Smelly Egg Contents
Here are some fragrant items you can put in the eggs for the game:
- Playdough
- Dried seaweed snacks
- Scented putty
- Sour gummy candies
- Vanilla extract
- Bubble gum
- Burnt popcorn
- Black licorice or black jelly beans
- Lemon rind
- Orange peel
- Peppermint extract on a cotton ball
- Fish food (it’s very smelly!)
- Vinegar on a cotton ball
- Dried lavender
- Rose petals
- Banana chips
- Coconut flakes
- Fresh basil leaves
- Cinnamon sticks
- Pickle slice (let sit on a paper towel first to drain the liquid)
- Pepperoni slices or jerky
- Dried dog or cat food (especially the fish-flavored cat food or fish cat food snacks!)
- Soy sauce on a cotton ball
- Popcorn
- Mint leaves
- Chocolate chips
- Pine needles
- Cotton candy pieces
- Peppermint candy or peppermint gum
It’s really only limited by your imagination! You can put anything in the eggs as long as it’s smelly and it doesn’t leak or fall out of the hole in the end of the plastic egg.
⭐️PARTY TIP: If you’re playing with younger kids or as a kids’ party game, it may be helpful to make a list of all the ingredient items in the eggs as a “cheat sheet” that they can look at and choose from for their answers.
Setting Up The Plastic Egg Game
Start by numbering each plastic egg with a black marker. This will allow you to make an answer sheet (for example, #1: bubblegum) as well as help the players give their corresponding answers.
For each egg:
- Place a “smelly” item in the egg.
- Close the egg and then place a piece of clear tape around the seam so that the egg can’t be opened.
- Note on your answer sheet what is in the egg (again, #1: bubblegum, etc.).
- Place the egg in the egg basket for the party.
Repeat this setup until you’ve filled all the eggs you need for the party game.
⭐️PARTY TIP: I would do at least 1o-15 filled eggs. If you do too few, the game will be over too quickly. If you do too many, people will lose interest in the middle of the game.
Playing The Smelly Egg Easter Game
Goal of the Game
To be the player to identify the most scents in the eggs to win a prize.
Egg Game Instructions
- Have players sit around a table or in a circle.
- Hand out pens and paper to each game player (and clipboards, if using).
- Ask players to number their papers with the amount of eggs in the game. (We just numbered the paper ahead of time for everyone to save time).
- Explain the goal of the game to the players.
- Start by handing each person an egg. Each player should then smell the hole end of the egg and try to guess the scent inside and writing it on the corresponding number on their paper. (Be sure to remind them that each egg has a number written on it and their guess should be written on the paper next to that corresponding number.)
- When the player is done with that egg, they pass it to their left and get a new egg.
- Play continues until all players have had a chance to write their guess for all eggs.
Winning the Game
Read the answer sheet for each egg and the scent.
Guests should place a check next to any guess they got correct.
Player with most correct guesses wins the game!
PARTY TIP: You may want to have a couple of prizes in case there is a tie!
I hope you have fun with the smelly egg Easter game!
