large batch of homemade puppy chow recipe for large group recipes

This is a large batch recipe for Puppy Chow for a crowd (aka: muddy buddy recipe in big batches) and is one of my favorite party snack recipes.

Jump to Recipe

I adapted the original sweet treat recipe because we make this for holiday parties for Thanksgiving sweets and Christmas desserts, but to also have enough to give for homemade food gifts (along with the traditional Chex Mix recipe) or to use for Christmas bake sales in Mason Jars with cute holiday ribbons.

It was originally called “Puppy Chow” (which is what we still call it), but changed its name to “Muddy Buddies” a few years ago.

Ingredients For Puppy Chow:

  • Chex Cereal variety
  • Peanut butter
  • Chocolate chips
  • Butter (real butter, not margarine!)
  • Powdered sugar

What is the Puppy Chow sugar?

The sugar on muddy buddies puppy chow is just regular plain confectioners’ sugar that you get in the baking aisle.

We like a lot of extra powdered sugar on our Puppy Chow recipe.

And by A LOT, I mean, we don’t like to see the cereal or chocolate.

If you like lightly covered puppy chow muddy buddies, then slowly mix in the powdered confectioners sugar a little at a time until your Puppy Chow cereal is covered to your liking.

You may not need all the sugar listed in this recipe.

About Making Puppy Chow Recipes In Large Batches

Tips for Coating The Puppy Chow Muddy Buddy Cereal In Large Servings

This large recipe for puppy chow makes about 18 cups, so you will need a large roasting pan (which is what I use) or several of these kinds of resealable bags for making this recipe.

If you’re using regular sealable plastic bags, you’re going to have to make this in many smaller batches in order to get the chocolate and powder sugar coating to cover the cereal completely.

You can use those large 2-gallon ziploc bags, but I think it’s really hard to get this puppy chow in large batches evenly coated with the chocolate mixture and powder sugar in bags.

I recommend making large batches of puppy chow in an oversized roasting pan like this. (I use the pan I make a turkey in).

large amount of Puppy Chow with Powdered Sugar recipe

When tossing the cereal, chocolate, and sugar in the roasting pan, I use a rubber spatula or a large, flat rubber spoon and carefully turn the cereal over and over. It works great.

Another recipe tip for oversized puppy chow recipes is that I add the powdered sugar a little at time.

I add 1/2 cup to 1 cup sugar to the chocolate peanut butter covered cereal.

Then, I gently toss the party mix, add more powdered sugar, stir again, and then continue this process until the cereal mixture is completely covered with sugar.

One last note: I use an oversized glass measuring cup like this for melting chocolate, peanut butter, and butter.

This is how I’ve been making huge batches of  Puppy Chow for YEARS for the holidays or for party foods!

RECIPE NOTE: The traditional puppy chow recipe calls for vanilla extract. I don’t add it to my puppy chow because we have found we like it without it. If you like it with vanilla, stir in 2 teaspoons to the melted peanut butter and chocolate before pouring it onto the cereal.

HELPFUL RECIPE TIP: A 12-ounce box of Chex Mix cereal usually has around 8 cups in it.

Puppy Chow For A Crowd

I started making this Puppy Chow Muddy Buddies recipe in large quantities so that I could have some of this sweet party mix for our Christmas party foods and then use the rest for party favor bags and also give some as homemade food gifts for the holidays.

Course: Desserts
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 20 minutes minutes
Cook Time: 2 minutes minutes
Total Time: 22 minutes minutes
Servings: 18 cups

Equipment

  • Large roasting pan or extra large casserole dish

Ingredients

  • 18 cups Chex Mix Cereal combination of Rice Chex, Corn Chex, and Chocolate Chex
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup peanut butter smooth (not chunky)
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)

Instructions

  • In a large roasting pan or casserole dish, pour in the 18 cups of Chex Cereal varieties. Gently stir with a rubber spatula to mix the cereal. Set aside.
  • In a large, microwavable glass bowl or large glass measuring cup, add the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter. Microwave for 45 seconds. Carefully remove from microwave and stir. Continue microwaving in 30 second increments until melted and easily stirred.
  • When melted, remove from microwave and stir to combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter into a smooth mixture.
  • Working quickly in batches, pour some of the peanut butter chocolate mixture over the cereal and gently stir with a rubber spatula, taking care not to crush the cereal. Continue this process until all the peanut butter chocolate mixture is used and the cereal is covered.
  • Sprinkle one cup of powdered sugar over the coated cereal and gently stir. Add another cup of powder sugar and gently stir again. Continue this process until all of the cereal is completely coated with powdered sugar. (You may not use all of the powdered sugar.)
  • Allow to cool before serving, adding to favor bags, or putting gift jars for gifting.

Notes

*If you like vanilla in your Muddy Buddy Puppy Chow, stir in 2 teaspoons to the peanut butter/chocolate mixture after melting.
NOTE: Do not use margarine in this recipe. Using real butter adds a rich creaminess to the peanut butter mixture!
