These cornbread drop dumplings are one of my favorite ways to make soup dumplings or a chili topping.
Using classic Jiffy corn muffin mix (or cornbread mix), you can make an easy dumpling recipe!
How To Make Homemade Cornbread Drop Dumplings
If you’ve never had cornbread dumplings (or cornmeal dumplings), you’re in for a treat!
That sweet and savory cornbread taste with the crumbly texture is really good in soups and stews!
What do you serve with cornbread dumplings?
These dumplings are heartier than regular flour soup dumplings and really enhance your favorite red chili recipe.
I make cornbread dumplings with many different hearty soups, stews, or chili.
I also always make cornbread dumplings with my Southwest sweet potato stew recipe.
Use cornbread dumplings in:
- Red chili
- Ham and bean soup
- Sweet potato soup
- Black bean soup
- Beef stew
- Creamy chicken soup
- Lentil soup
- Vegetable soup
Any kind of soup or stew you would eat cornbread with, then this cornmeal dumpling recipe will probably work, too!
Ingredients for Cornmeal Drop Dumplings
- 1 8.5-ounce box Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup milk
- Salt
- Pepper
The number of dumplings you get out of this recipe varies based on how big or small you make your dumpling drops.
Recipe Instructions for Cornbread Dumplings
1. Mix cornbread according to package directions.
Using the cornmeal box instructions, in a medium mixing bowl stir together corn bread mix, egg, and milk.
Add salt and pepper, to taste.
Stir by hand until dry mixture is combined and lumps are gone.
2. Spoon cornbread batter in dollops on top of the soup.
In the last hour of cooking your soup, stew or chili, drop spoonfuls of cornbread dumpling mix directly on top of the cooking soup.
(This is why they’re called drop dumplings! You just drop them right into the soup from the spoon.)
Replace crockpot lid or soup pot lid and cook for 30 to 60 minutes or until cornbread is cooked through.
Serve soup, stew, or chili in bowls topped with cornbread dumplings.
RECIPE TIP: I also add a little salt and pepper on top of the cornbread dumplings before serving.
RECIPE TIP: The dumplings may sink into the liquid at first. That’s OK! They will pop back to the top as they cook. The individual soup dumplings may also fuse together while cooking (and not stay as separate dumplings). That’s OK, too! I just spoon through the topping into the soup when serving and place a piece of the topping in the bowl with soup. If you’ve ever made drop dumplings you know that they’re not perfectly round dumplings anyway.
