OK, you probably already know about our love of cooking with children’s books and easy recipes for children’s cooking (making real food fun!).
But, one of the things we struggle with is getting kids excited to help in the kitchen with things that aren’t as “fun” — like prep and clean up instead of kids cooking recipes or kids cooking games.
One of things that I hate when looking for kids cooking utensils is that if you search “kids cooking tools” (or whatever), you get a bunch of play cooking sets … which is fine if that’s what you’re looking for.
(We’ve had our fair share of play food and baking kitchens and play pots and pans that we’ve loved!)
But, I’m looking for a real kids cooking set (or junior cooking set) and kids baking tools. I want a set of kitchen tools that are fun, but that we can really use — real kids’ cooking tools — the kind of cooking tools that spark creativity and fun kitchen gadgets that are useful.
You know, something that makes children cooking EXCITED to help out in the kitchen (and how to get kids to clean without being asked!).
So, we went on a search for fun and useful children cooking supplies and a real cooking set for kids.
Here are our favorite child-friendly kitchen utensils that we found (that are also super fun — you’ll even want to start your own children cooking classes at home or kids cooking school while the kids are home!). These are real cooking tools for toddlers and up (and safe cooking tools)!
These kitchen gadgets also make great cooking gifts for kids, gifts for kid chefs for children cooking activities, and fun to get a child who has everything or curious chef kids!

About Child Friendly Kitchen Utensils
Before we get to the cool children cooking supplies, I want to cover, How do I teach my child to cut food?
What age can a child cut with a knife?
Many kids show enough motor skills to start using a knife around age 5. Around ages 6-7, they can start cutting with supervision. As with anything, children develop differently so use your own judgment. You know your children best, but remember to always supervise your child in the kitchen!
One of the best ways to introduce your child to knife skills is to start out with safety knives (or child friendly potato peeler) like age-appropriate kitchen knives for kids (and don’t forget the cutting gloves!):
Be sure to get the child knife kit because one of the problems of cooking with kids is that you need cooking utensils for small hands!
What are knife skills?
Knife skills are learning how to properly hold a knife, use a knife, and cut food. A child’s safety knife set can help with this. Knife skills are also important so that the chefs and cooks don’t get hurt!

Children Cooking Supplies #1: Mr. Sneezy Egg Separator
Because kids love gross things, they’ll love this Mr. Sneezy Egg Separator.
(My daughter said, “That’s funny! And gross! I kinda like it!”)
You crack the egg into the open head and then the whites separate out his nose like (wait for it) … snot.
(You’re welcome.)
You can also use it for syrup, gravy, and a bunch of other fun recipes and cooking projects.
Children Cooking Supplies #2: Spaghetti Monster Colander Strainer
What makes pasta recipes more fun than a monster colander?
(Nothing, I know.)
We recommend that you use this with our rainbow pasta recipe to maximize the fun. ::wink::
And, while you’re at it, add this NESSIE pasta spoon and NESSIE sauce ladle.
Children Cooking Supplies #3: Mortar & Pestle
A mortar and pestle is fun for kids because they get to crush!
Also, it’s a good introduction to STEM tools.
We love this Montessori kitchen tool for a mortar and pestle.
Children Cooking Supplies #4: Monkey Unicycle Pizza Wheel
We use our pizza cutter all the time when we cook and do food projects—and not just for pizza! We use it for tortillas when we’re making our own pita chips, to equally slice big cookies, and more!
(Plus, it’s a safer way to cut for kids.)
We have a regular pizza cutter, but this Monkey Unicycle Pizza Wheel will be on our list when we need one because, hellooooo, a unicycle riding monkey?
Sign. Me. Up.
Children Cooking Supplies #5: Kids’ Baking Set with Spatula, Spoon, Measuring Cup, Brush and Child Friendly Mixer
Anytime I can find a cooking set or baking set that’s fun and I can use, I’m all in for that!
I love this kids’ baking set because not only does it come with cute (usable!) spatulas, measuring cups, and more shaped like people, but it comes with a kid friendly mixer—which is great for little hands that may be too young to use an electric mixer.
If you’re looking for a complete set of cooking tools, try the Curious Chef Caddy with 30 different pieces (and Curious Chef has “real kitchen tools specifically designed for little hands”).
Children Cooking Supplies #6: Bear Hand Oven Mitts
Don’t forget to teach kids about oven safety… and what better way to do that than with bear hand oven mitts?
(They also have polar bear oven mitts, too!)
Children Cooking Supplies #7: Star Wars R2-D2 Measuring Cup Set
If your kid is a Star Wars fan, then you definitely need to add the Star Wars R2-D2 Measuring Cup Set to your cooking gadgets.
R2-D2 has detachable arms that turn into measuring spoons and the stackable body comes apart to make measuring cups.
(Fun to play with, too!)
If you’re not a Star Wars fan, Curious Chef has a fantastic 17-piece measure and prep kit that you may want to check out!
Children Cooking Supplies #8: Singing Floating Pasta Timer
The Singing Floating Pasta Timer is great for kids just learning to cook pasta, especially if they’re trying to learn the different level of “doneness.”
Place the pasta timer dude in the water and he will sing (for real!) when the pasta is done. You can set it for four different “done” times.
Children Cooking Supplies #9: Non Stick Silicone Frog Mold for Eggs and Pancakes
If you are looking for an egg poacher, consider this fun kitchen tool instead!
You’ll have fun getting your kids to eat their breakfast with this non-stick silicone frog mold that you can make eggs, pancakes, or whatever you can imagine!
(If you want other animal molds, check out this animal mold set.)
Children Cooking Supplies #10: Space Pop Molds
These popsicle molds will have you making fun (and healthy!) popsicles with your kids!
And, bonus fun? They’re shaped like space ships and astronauts and with the “easy release” design, they’ll hold their shape once frozen.
(If you’re looking for a blender for healthy smoothies to make into pops, we have this one and really love it. We use it regularly for all different kinds of drinks and cooking projects.)
Children Cooking Supplies #11: Food Chopper
If you’re concerned about chopping and cutting, you definitely need to get a food chopper.
With this chopper, you just put the fruit or vegetable in the top and press the lid down. You can also chop different shapes and dices but just changing out the blade.
The kids will have a blast with it!
Children Cooking Supplies #12: BB-8 Kitchen Timer
You definitely need a kitchen timer with children cooking, so why not make it a cool one?
This BB-8 kitchen timer is not just a timer, it lights up and even has sound from the movie!
If you’re not into Star Wars, that’s cool. Try a piggy or cow timer or an egg boiling timer.
Children Cooking Supplies #13: Kid Safe Knife Set
If you’re cooking with kids, you’ll definitely want to work on knife skills with them.
If that makes you a little nervous (or, you just feel like your kids are too young to use regular knives), then you’ll definitely want to pick up a plastic knife set like this one.
(Also check out this children cooking set that comes with plastic knives, aprons, cutting gloves, and fruit cutters.)
Children Cooking Supplies #14: Mixing Bowls with Non-Slip Base
A must-have for your children cooking supplies (or junior baking set) is mixing bowls with non-slip base.
The base allows the bowl to stay in place while adding ingredients or stirring and mixing so you don’t end up with a mess all over the floor or counter!
Children Cooking Supplies #15: Adjustable Rolling Pin
An adjustable rolling pin is good for new bakers because it helps you understand the thickness required for different types of baking from cookies to pies to biscuits and more.
We like this Adjustable Rolling Pin with Thickness Rings and Pastry Mat.
Children Cooking Supplies #16: Learning Tower
If you have little hands helping you out, then you’ll definitely need a learning tower.
In case you’ve never heard of them, a learning tower is just a fancy way of saying, “safe stool to stand at countertop height.”
(You don’t want just a stool because it will be too easy for little ones to fall off or try to balance while cooking.)
We like this safety learning tower because it’s adjustable!
Children Cooking Supplies #17: Novelty Kid’s Apron with Chef Hat
OK. This isn’t really a kids’ cooking “must have,” but your kids will have a lot of fun with an apron and chef’s hat while cooking!
If you have kids a little beyond that novelty, try just a cool apron instead.
(Everyone needs one while cooking!)
Check out other fun kids’ aprons here.
