An important part of that last supper was unleavened bread and wine (which you can substitute with grape juice for kids).

HOW TO HAVE A LAST SUPPER FOR FAMILY ACTIVITIES DURING EASTER WEEK

Hosting a last supper meal is really quite easy.

You want to include traditional foods for the time, served in simple (communal) serving bowls and platters that are shared by everyone.

It would be great to add to a Sunday school lesson for preschool Easter ideas on Easter Sunday (or Easter week), kids religious Easter party for church, youth group Easter ideas, or even a Bible-based activity for family at home.

Here’s what we did for a Last Supper Easter menu….

Last Super Dinner Menu Tip #1: Serve only foods that were commonly eaten during Biblical times.

Make a Last Supper dinner menu made up of any of the foods from that time.

Don’t be afraid to try new things (like figs and honey – see recipe below) for your journey through Easter dinner night.

You can include anything you want in your diner menu, but it’s fun to try to stay true to the time period as much as you can for your holy supper event.

Traditional foods of this time included:

  • Unleavened bread/wheat
  • Herbs
  • Goat cheese / feta
  • Goat’s milk
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Figs
  • Dates
  • Olives
  • Olive Oil
  • Pomegranates (learn how to cut and eat pomegranates)
  • Grapes
  • Honey
  • Lentils
  • Wine

MENU TIP: Unleavened bread is a flat bread without an agent to make it rise (like yeast). You can use pita bread or naan as your unleavened bread, or even make your own unleavened bread recipe!

What did we include in our Last Supper menu?

What do you serve at a Last Supper dinner?

  • Grapes
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Cucumbers
  • Nuts
  • Feta cheese
  • Olive oil with fresh rosemary
  • Roasted figs with honey
  • Pickled onions
  • Olives (black and green)
  • Halva butter
  • Flat bread (we used Naan)
  • Honey
  • Herbs and spices

You can also include grape juice, hummus, plain chickpeas, stuffed grape leaves, pears, and other traditional foods for this time for your celebration. The list above is just what we used for our supper menu.

Last Super Dinner Menu Tip #2: Make a communal food spread.

For your journey to Easter meal, place food on simple, communal platters and bowls that everyone shares (like these wood serving plates).

Food during that time was eaten with hands instead of utensils, so have fun with it!

We added finger bowls with water so people could regularly rinse their fingers (and this was a really good addition!).

You can serve water or grape juice with your Easter food.

  • These wood cups are perfect for your Last Supper meal!

We actually served ours on wood cheese boards like these that we already had and they worked perfectly!

You don’t have to stress too much about what you put the food on.

Just present it in a family-style food sharing way.

You can also spread food platters on a tablecloth on the floor or on a low table and have everyone sit on pillows around the spread.

Last Super Dinner Menu Tip #3: Dress up in clothing appropriate for the time period.

If you really want to get into your Easter journey, have everyone dress up in period clothing for the time!

Men and women both wore tunics and sandals.

Women’s tunics were long enough to cover their feet.

Women may have also worn head coverings (like scarves) over long hair that was braided.

Women also wore jewelry, especially bracelets.

Last Super Dinner Menu Tip #4: Decorate with oil lamps or candles.

Remember, during Jesus time there was no electricity.

Recreate the atmosphere by turning off the lights and instead using candles or oil lamps on your table and around the room.

Last Super Dinner Menu Tip #5: Create smells from the time.

The open outdoor markets during the time Jesus Christ was alive was filled with smells — spices, animals, food, and more. These smells really takes you through the journey of Easter and the Last Supper during that time.

You can recreate the smells by burning frankincense and myrrh candles (or other spice candles), incense, wax melts, or using essential oils.

We used Frankincense & Myrrh sticks like this and it worked really well to recreate the atmosphere.

We found that this, the candles, and the music really added to our a Easter Last Supper dinner, so I highly recommend adding this into your event.

Last Super Dinner Menu Tip #6: Play ancient music of the Middle East.

Music was also a big part of this time (just like any other time).

Play ancient music of the Middle East like this from the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble (or from here, but just know this one has commercials).

It really helped recreate sounds of the Bible times for our Easter party.

  • OUR PARTY TIP EXPERIENCE: We all agreed that the incense and the music (in a candlelit room) were really what pushed this from being a really good party to a really great party that gave us sights, sounds, and tastes of the time. DO NOT skip the incense and music part!

Last Super Dinner Easter Bible Verses

We took turns reading Easter story Bible verses during our party and everyone thought this was a nice touch.

You can read:

Bible Verses for The Last Supper (Maundy Thursday)

Luke 22:19-20

“And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.'”

Matthew 26:26-28

“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'”

Bible Verses for Jesus’ Crucifixion (Good Friday)

John 19:17-18

“Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.”

Luke 23:33-34

“When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’ And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.”

Matthew 27:50-51

“And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split.”

Bible Verses for Jesus’ Burial

Matthew 27:59-60

“Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.”

Bible Verses for Jesus’ Resurrection (Easter Sunday)

Matthew 28:5-6

“The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.'”

Mark 16:6

“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.”

Luke 24:6-7

“He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’”

John 20:27-29

“Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’ Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'”

Bible Verses for The Great Commission

Matthew 28:19-20

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
