Dyed Deviled Eggs Recipe Instructions Step-By-Step

Boiling Eggs For Deviled Eggs And Dyed Egg Whites

When you’re coloring whites of eggs, you want to make sure they you use an easy peel boiled egg technique because every piece of the egg white that is missing (or peeled away) will show when you dye the egg whites (especially if you are coloring egg whites vibrant colors). It will be harder to get that nice, uniform colored egg white color (and sometimes appears blotchy or uneven colored).

So, be careful when peeling your boiled eggs and remove all the shell of hard boiled eggs!

LEARN HOW TO MAKE EASY TO PEEL BOILED EGGS FOR THIS RECIPE. (This is the no fail peeling eggs technique that I swear by!)

Once you peel the eggshells, cut the eggs lengthwise and scoop out the cooked egg yolks into a mixing bowl. Set aside to make the yolk mixture.

Rinse the cooked egg whites to remove any remaining traces of the cooked yellow yolk.

Place egg halves on paper towels upside down in a single layer to drain.

Tips and Tricks For Dyed Deviled Eggs and How To Color Hard Boiled Eggs step by step colored devil eggs pictures

Tips To Color The Eggs

TIP 1: Use one cup for each egg color.

You will need one cup of water for each color — enough water to cover an egg white half completely.

PRO RECIPE TIP: If you’re using many colors, use large muffin tins to make mini dye baths and dye the egg whites. We used Solo cups and they worked great.

Add 3-5 drops of food coloring to the water and then place egg whites to the colored water.

Color one of the egg white halves at a time in each cup. (Sometimes if you do more than one, there will be darker lines on the eggs where they touch.)

TIP 2: Adjust the food color.

Add food coloring drops (enough to reach desired color) to each cup, one color per cup. We found that regular food coloring or gel food coloring works. (Although sometimes you can find really vibrant colors in the gel food coloring.)

RECIPE TIP: We did not use vinegar and our egg white colors came out really bright, still. However, if you feel like you aren’t getting the colors you want, add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar to each cup with the water.

TIP 3: Be patient on the egg coloring!

If you want more light colored egg whites (like for pastel colored Easter deviled eggs or a baby shower recipe), leave them in the egg dye a shorter time.

We wanted really vibrant egg white colors (because we made them for Easter deviled eggs and wanted bright color combinations for the Easter party), so we left eggs in the dye coloring longer.

Check on the eggs after 5 minutes by using a slotted spoon to remove the colored egg from the egg dye water.

Tip 4: Drain the eggs.

Once the egg whites are the color that you desire, drain them on a paper plate lined with paper towels until you’re ready to fill them with the deviled egg filling.

Be sure to flip them upside down (so the egg hole where the yolk was  is down on the paper plate). If you don’t, extra egg dye will pool in the egg hole and may color the deviled egg filling when you fill the eggs.

Ingredients

  • 6 large hard-boiled and peeled eggs
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Paprika for garnish (optional)
  • White vinegar
  • Food coloring of choice

Instructions

TO COLOR BOILED EGG WHITES:

  • Cut the boiled eggs in half (lengthwise) and carefully scoop out the egg yolks into a small mixing bowl. Set aside for the deviled egg filling recipe.
  • Gently wash boiled eggs whites to remove any remaining yolk.
  • Place 1/2 cup water, 3-4 drops of food coloring, and 1 teaspoon of white vinegar in each cup. (One color per cup.)
  • Add one cooked egg white to each cup. Allow to sit for 5 minutes and then check for desired color. The egg colors will become brighter and deeper the longer you let them sit in the egg dye.
  • Once the egg whites are the color that you desire, drain them on a paper plate lined with paper towels until they are dry to touch and you’re ready to fill them with the deviled egg filling (next section).

TO MAKE DEVILED EGG FILLING:

  • In the mixing bowl, mash egg yolks completely with fork.
  • Stir in mayonnaise, mustard, and sweet pickle relish into the egg yolks. Combine completely.
  • Add salt and pepper, to taste.
  • Pipe or spoon deviled egg mixtures into colored egg whites. (SEE TIP IN POST FOR EASY EGG YOLK PIPING!)
  • Sprinkle with paprika right before serving (optional).
  • Chill until ready to serve. Store in refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
